 8-Hour Itinerary

8:30 AM - Depart Girdwood

  • Start your trip early to ensure you’re at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center when it opens.

  • The drive takes about 15 minutes.

9:00 AM - Arrive at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC)

  • Explore the center and its wildlife exhibits for 1 hour.

10:15 AM - Depart AWCC for Explorer Lake & Glacier view 

  • It’s a short 5-10 minute drive to the viewing area.

10:25 AM - Arrive at Explorer Lake Viewing Area

  • Spend about 10 minutes admiring the natural beauty and taking pictures

10:35 AM - Depart for Portage Fish Viewing Area

  • The Viewing area is a 5-minute drive away. Spend Time Admiring the natural beauty

10:45 AM - Depart for Portage Lake Visitor Center 

  • Explore Begich boss Visitor Center.

  • Visit Portage daylodge Gallery and Gifts

  • Take pictures of the lake

  • Snack Time

11.40- Depart For Portage Glacier Cruise

  • Check-in and boarding.

12:00 PM - Take the Portage Glacier Cruise

  • Enjoy the 1-hour cruise on Portage Lake, taking in stunning views of the glacier.

1:15 PM - Depart for Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel

  • The next westbound tunnel opening to Whittier is at 1:30 PM. Drive to the tunnel (15 minutes) and wait in line.

1:30 PM - Tunnel to Whittier

  • Drive through the tunnel (6 minutes) and explore Whittier

  • Grab a quick bite, visit the harbor, or explore the town.

  • Waterfalls & Glacier views, 

3:30 PM - Depart Whittier

  • Take the westbound tunnel at 3:45 PM. Return through the tunnel (6 minutes) and drive toward Girdwood.

4:15 PM - Arrive Back in Girdwood

  • Wrap up your day with time to relax or explore local attractions and restaurants.
